The Standing Poses: October’s mini-workshop with Nicole & Letitia
What: The Standing Poses
When: October 22, 2011 from 1 to 4 pm
Where: Asheville Movement Center in West Asheville. Need directions?
Cost: $40
Invigorate your body, mind & spirit as well as practice the fundamentals for correct movement through a refreshing sequence of standing poses.
Standing poses are the basis of any on-going yoga practice. They teach the fundamentals of nearly all the other poses, feed almost any other practice (even restorative work is easier when you have a good understanding of the standing poses) and are perhaps the heart of the matter when it comes to an asana practice. They build stamina, improve circulation & breathing and strengthen nearly every part of the body: back, hips, knees, neck and shoulders.
This is a great workshop for all levels of students as standing poses give the opportunity to learn & re-learn the fundamentals of asana. When we improve our standing poses the benefits show in our life off the mat as well, when we’re sitting, walking, running, even standing.
Join us for an opportunity to open your groins, stretch & strengthen your arms and elongate your spine!
Remember: no Sunday class following a workshop.
Email Nicole or call 828-230-8213 to reserve your space. The cap for this workshop is 16 and we already have a good start on the sign-up sheet.
I spent a good part of my late twenties feeling really sorry for myself. For most of my life, I had been a high level athlete and literally had run my body into the ground. At the age of 25 I was barely able to take a walk around the block and I found myself at a loss as to how to exercise. Even swimming hurt my knees and so I fell into a bad cycle where I did not move my body, spending way too much time on the couch lamenting my the status of my health.
I had been to many doctors who either wanted to do knee surgery, offer me pain killers or physical therapy. I tried the PT but if just never stuck and so I continued on my path, chanting the mantra of “why me”. That all changed one day in the doctors office when before I could finish my sentence he started to reach for his prescription pad and write me one for vicodin. I started yelling, crying a little…basically threw a big old baby tantrum. He stopped and said. “well you could always join our yoga for pain management class we offer’. I signed up that day and have been practicing yoga ever since.
Since the first class, I knew I had come home. That year I just kept signing up for my weekly class. My knees weren’t healed but I finally had some hope. Even with just one class a week, I noticed increased range of motion, less pain and mostly, a cleared more relax state of being. When I think back on my journey, I realized that it took about ten years to end the knee pain and to this day, I still have some issues with my knees but what changed was I finally had hope. Hope that I could change and grow, hope that life could be all I dreamed it to be…hope for a better, brighter future.
What change are you hoping for? Come join the sangha and let those hopes and dreams become your reality.
Gabriel Halpern is returning to Asheville for a weekend yoga workshop. The workshop will be help at One Center Yoga. More information to follow soon!

Class is where one gathers the seeds,
but home practice is where those seeds take root.

The new year has arrived and tradition calls for us to make resolutions. For many of our students, “start doing some yoga at home” is on the list. Like most resolutions, that’s easier resolved than accomplished.
Help yourself to keep the intention for home yoga study. Make a formal commitment to your health & well-being by joining the Building a Home Practice Workshop with Nicole & Letitia. Get your home practice going on January 8th from 1 to 4 pm at the Asheville Movement Center.
This workshop will answer the questions:
- what should I do once I’m on the mat?
- how do I face the obstacles of time and space constraints?
- what can home practice give me that class can’t?
Participants will have the opportunity to explore their intentions in deepening their personal practice and learn techniques for overcoming obstacles to “hitting the mat”. We will also be giving personalized instruction for down dog and illustrating how a mirror can enhance home practice.
Begin the journey of letting practice sustain the rest of your life (your dharma) by joining a like-minded group of yogis, all seeking growth and change.
Send us an email if you want to attend!
Due to the inclement weather, there will be no Sunday Yoga Sangha class at the Asheville Movement Center today, December 12, 2010.
So stay home, stay safe, hit the mat and we’ll see you on Tuesday.
Nicole and I are excited to announce that one of our main teachers and the creator of the Hip Series is coming back to Asheville this April. Please join us for a weekend of study with one of the true masters of yoga for both the body and the soul.
And because we will be attending this workshop, we will not have class this Sunday, April 25th.
